Pereybere Beach

Welcome to Pereybere beach, where immaculate white beaches and crystal-clear blue sea take on their full meanings. Breathtaking if the first word which will come to your mind when you set your feet there. Even though the beach is only 150 meters long, which is quite small as compared to other popular beaches, it is the nicest family beach in the north since it is likely one of the very few beaches where swimming is permitted.

This is also likely the reason why this beach is the busiest in the region. The entire expanse of this beach is lined with rows of palm trees, and beach shacks nearby provide a range of culinary choices. If you want to lounge in the sun while your kids play in the shallow parts of the beach, there are plenty of deck chairs set up that you can hire.

Brief History of Pereybere

Pereybere is named after a landowner called Charles Péreybère. Around the year 1845 possessed about 703 acres of land in this village. He consented to sell his farm to another man named Mr. Georges Castel several years later, in 1929. However, because malaria had already spread on these grounds, they remained unsuitable until white Mauritians of French heritage arrived and erected houses, camps and hotels. However, the community of Péreybère has retained its unrivaled simplicity and spirit.

Also, it is possibly the safest beach for them to swim in crystal clear water and play on the nicest white sandy beach.

It is quite common as well to find elderly people sitting in small groups to enjoy the view before venturing in the sea.

Things to know before visiting Pereybere

On weekends, it is extremely crowded, with limited available parking spaces.

Like explained earlier, the beach is quite small. You may find it sometimes uncomfortable to swim among so many people.

Even though the sea is quite safe, you shouldn’t go too far from the shore as the steep is slope. As such you could find yourself in trouble if your feet can’t reach the sand anymore, particularly if you are not a good swimmer.

Islands to visit around Pereybere

The five islands:

Regular boats trips including Catamaran are available via local operators to visit the five islands in the North. These boats usually depart from the nearby village of Grand Bay. These islands are:

L’ile Plate (Flat Island) & Ilot Grabriel (Gabriel Island)

Two tiny islands, Ile Plate (also known as Flat Island) and Ilot Gabriel (also known as Gabriel Island), are situated about 10 km from the coast. They provide picture-perfect protected landscapes that are bordered by white beaches and connected by a turquoise lagoon. Snorkeling is possible in the lagoon that connects the islands, but only experienced swimmers should explore it due to strong currents. There may be rays, turtles, and other tropical fishes there.

Coin de Mire (Gunners’ Quoin)

We got the feeling of shooting directly at a massive whale floating in the water as we exit the bay of Grand Baie and stare towards Coin de Mire from the catamaran. It solely consists of the well-known Coin de Mire, also known as "Gunner's Quoin," a natural reserve that is home to geckos, rabbits, and several local species, including tropicbirds with red, white or white-tipped bills. As we are anchored next to these stunning cliffs, we can only observe how difficult and steep the restricted access is.

L’ile Ronde (Round island)

This uninhabited islet called Round Island is located about 22 kilometers away from the coast and is about 1.7 square kilometers. Since 1957, the island has been a natural reserve, and it is jointly managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and the National Parks and Conservation Service. Birdlife International has recognized the island as an Important Bird Area (IBA). During a boat trip, you can actually dive with sharks there.

Ile aux Serpents (Serpent Island)

Île aux Serpents is remote and secluded enough to preserve the type of natural beauty that thrives without human intervention. This island is nonetheless well of a visit even if it isn't as well-known among visitors as the Flat Island or Coin de Mire. Visitors can board catamarans or boats that depart from Cap Malheureux for the main island. Unfortunately, despite the island's name of Île aux Serpents, no snakes can be discovered there. All of the snake species that once lived on the island are now extinct.

Reviews of Pereybere beach

Mike D.: “That's right, Pereybere is magnificent, and I have very fond memories of it, especially of the pineapples eaten on the beach.”

Anabelle L.: “We've been to Pereybere 5 times on vacation. Superbly located.”

Laurent S:. “I bathed there! The water: what a delight, what a color”

Corinne S.: “I love this beautiful place where I live. At home, I wake up to the sound of birdsong and passing cows.”

Andy E.: “I can confirm that I go there several times a year at Pereybere, sometimes on foot from Grand Baie.”

Gilbert T: “Our future vacation spot reserved since spring 2020!”

Payen R: “Everyone loves this paradise that is Mauritius...a haven of peace.”

Nath P. “I've been going there quite regularly since 1998, when I knew Pereybere with its many small stores (food, souvenirs etc....), most of which have disappeared and been replaced by Winner's super market. The big supermarkets have sprung up like mushrooms and soon, given property prices, it will no longer be a dream island. There's still a beautiful coastline, but the "posh" beaches will be off-limits to the public. The street vendors are also disappearing. Fortunately, there's always the kindness of Mauritians and their hospitality. Er are losing everything, even paradise countries. What kind of world are we living in? “

Laetitia S.: “Out of confinement, we've been going to Pereybere every year for several years now, and now we're seriously starting to miss it, as it's a very pleasant place to live. Can't wait to eat at my favorite restaurant again and pick up my fruit and vegetables from my buddy Nizam's.”

Marie M : “Your description makes me want to go there. Unfortunately, having grown up there until I was 8 and returning often, Pereybere has changed too much. Between the Europeans who think the beach belongs to them, the Mauritians who leave their garbage on the ground, the overflowing beach garbage cans and the stray dogs who eat in them, it's already a lot. Being one of the non-private but very beautiful beaches, there's no need to say that what I've just mentioned taints Pereybere.”

Christelle H.: “We've been thinking about it for ten years, maybe one day to live there.“

Robert L: “Beautiful beach but small and overrun at weekends. The deckchairs prevent locals from getting on the beach for lack of space.”

Angela S.: “I love Pereybere and swimming there early in the morning is a delight! We love this part of Mauritius.”
