Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette church is located 5 km from the village on the road to Vale. The Church of the Holy Guardian Angels is located on the coastal road at the entrance to the village of Grand Bay.

History:

1823: Victor Mazery buys the property of Mare-Sèche. He builds a wooden chapel in his garden dedicated to Our Lady of Good Help which is blessed in 1852. The Catholic population of Mare-Sèche was 147 while that of Grand-Baie was 240 children and adults.

1852: Father Colyar, parish priest of Pamplemousses, blesses the chapel. Because of the shortage of priests, the rare celebrations were mostly held in this chapel. Since 1854, the Blessed Sacrament was reserved there.

1859: The sugar factory ceased to operate and the Mazery family gave the diocese a portion of 121/2 arpents and had plans made for a future church which was to be a miniature replica of the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, near Grenoble in France. The Virgin Mary had appeared there in 1846 to two children, Melanie and Maximin. It was a time when French-speaking Christianity had its eyes set on the Virgin of La Salette. In fact, the first apparition at Lourdes dates only from 1858.

September 25, 1862: Laying of the foundation stone of the church of Notre Dame de la Salette. The construction took 13 years and the colossal tower planned only resulted in the massive bell tower that dominates this part of the northern plain.

Since 1865, Grand-Baie has been a parish and has a residential priest. From then on, the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Help, Mare-Sèche, lost its raison d'être for the neighborhood. For twenty years, it had served as a place of worship for the North. From now on, it became a domestic chapel. At that time, the parish of La Salette, in addition to the chapel of Grand Bay and the oratory of Mare-Sèche, also had three branches:

  • Saint-Julien in Triolet
  • Good Shepherd in Cap Malheureux
  • Saint-Coeur-de-Marie in Trou-aux-Biches

December 1867, Father Tristan Bardet was appointed parish priest of Pamplemousses and was transferred to the parish of La-Salette in July 1869. During his pastorate he left his mark on the parish.

On December 8, 1869, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Father Bardet opened a temporary chapel in the church under construction. But with his departure due to illness, the construction did not progress.

July 31, 1875: Inauguration of the church which is open for worship. Its construction had lasted 13 years. The cross that dominates the building also dominates the Plaine du Nord / This construction was meant to be a miniature of the Basilica of La Salette in France.

1945: The cyclone of January 1945 severely damaged the church: the roof of the choir was removed.

November 3, 1970: The parish priest of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette has his residence in the village of Grand-Baie.

In 1975, Our Lady of La Salette celebrated its centennial.

August 5, 1935: The Chapel of Saints-Anges-Gardiens was inaugurated.

1945: The chapel is completely demolished by the cyclone. A new chapel is rebuilt, Jacques Desmarais and Félix Rousset were the architect and builder.

August 24, 1959: Inauguration of the new chapel, described by Bishop Joseph Mamet as "ultra-modern in style, built on the edge of the sea, from the open sea it appears like a boat, with a large sail outside" (5). During the years that followed, a Spiritan priest from the Collège du St. Esprit in Quatre-Bornes assured the weekly Sunday Mass. During the school vacations, the teachers of the College stayed in the bungalow which now serves as the presbytery.
