Plants that cling, alone, to a support (wall, pillar...) thanks to crampons (small roots), like the bignone*, the creeping charcoal, the climbing hydrangea and the ivy, or thanks to suction cups, like the Virginia creeper. Plants that wrap their stems around stakes, poles, tree trunks, ramps, wires...; these are the so-called "voluble" plants. Among them are actinidia, akebia, honeysuckle, clematis, wisteria, hop, morning glory, jasmine, black-eyed Susan... Plants that wrap their tendrils between the mesh of a fence or trellis: clematis, cobia, passionflower, sweet pea... The climbing rose uses its thorns.
