Old Stone Stairs in Daruty Forest

A quiet scene inside Daruty Forest, also known as Belle Vue Forest, showing old stone steps surrounded by tall trees, mossy rocks, and shaded vegetation. Located at Petit Raffray in the north of Mauritius, not far from Grand Baie, Daruty Forest covers about 108 hectares and is one of the few accessible forest walking areas in this part of the island. The site is especially appreciated by locals for walking, jogging, mountain biking, and short nature outings, offering a cool green escape away from the busier coastal towns. What makes this forest particular is the mix of nature and history. The name Daruty is linked to the Daruty family, former owners of a nearby sugar mill, and the forest is also associated with old sugar estate remains from the 19th century. These old stone stairs, partly hidden among rocks and trees, add to that sense of history, as if the forest still holds traces of the island's past. Since 2022, Daruty / Belle Vue Forest has also been recognised as an official marked nature trail in the north, making it easier for visitors to explore.
