Home of the Solar System, it is spiral, extends over about 100,000 light years and contains 100 to 400 billion stars. To this must be added at least as many planets. From Earth, we can only observe a cross section of the Milky Way, 1,000 to 3,000 light-years thick. It then appears as a trail of milky white light across the sky, hence its name. Observed since ancient times by the Ancients, it is named after Greek mythology, according to which Hera tore Heracles, son of Zeus, from her womb, thus making the milk spurt out onto the sky. Even tough the light pollution is quite high in the north of Mauritius, this nightscape with a ship wreck in the lagoon of Grand Gaube as foreground provides an amazing scene.
