Who is the parrot?

The term "parrot" refers to a group of tropical birds belonging to the family Psittacidae, of the order Psittaciformes. There are about 350 species of parrots, mainly in warm countries of the southern hemisphere, such as Australia, South America and Central America. In addition to parrots, there are parakeets and lovebirds in the order Psittaciformes. Very intelligent, they are sociable animals, which are generally monogamous. Their life expectancy is also to be underlined: these birds regularly exceed 60 years. In Mauritius, you can contemplate parrots with rich colored feathers at Casela.

Who is the macaw?

The macaw is simply a species of parrot. It is distinguished from other parrots by the very long feathers of its tail. They are found in tropical forests near rivers in South and Central America. Very social, they live in colonies, but form monogamous couples. There are 17 different species of macaws, divided into six genera. Of these, about half are endangered, and five species have already been declared extinct. The cause is the disappearance of their habitat and the illegal trade, these animals being very popular with individuals to become pets because of their beauty. If some of these birds measure only 30 cm, others are much larger. The Hyacinth Macaw, recognizable by its blue plumage and yellow areas around the eyes and beak, is 1 meter long, with a 1.5 meter wingspan, and weighs 1.7 kg. It is even the largest of all parrots.
