As is often the case, we make the mistake of referring to and confusing the crocodile, the alligator and the caiman by using the word "crocodile". But then, on what basis can we recognize them without being mistaken? It is important to specify that these three species are part of the order Crocodilia but belong to different families. We must then distinguish the family of Crocodylidaes (crocodiles), the Alligatorideas (alligators and caimans) but also the family of Gavialidaes (gavials). Thus, the word "crocodile" refers only to crocodiles. These reptiles have in common that they live in an aquatic environment for which they are perfectly adapted with a streamlined body. Their eyes, nostrils and ears are placed on the top of their head allowing the animal to hunt while being completely submerged. Their tail is used for swimming and their powerful limbs allow them to move on land with their body well lifted. They are carnivores feeding on birds, reptiles, mammals. After mating, the female will lay her eggs in a nest that she has built and that she will protect. The temperature will define the sex of the young. Once the young are hatched, the mother will carry them in her mouth. If you go in the south of Mauritius, you can discover the alligators at La Vanille Nature Park.
