Ilot Fourneau aerial view from Le Morne Mountain
Îlot Fourneau is a small islet located in the lagoon off Le Morne village, on the southwest coast of Mauritius. Unlike better-known islets such as Île aux Cerfs or Île aux Bénitiers, it remains relatively little known, which gives it a quieter and more local character. One of its most interesting features is that, at low tide, it is possible to walk across from the coast near Le Morne village through the shallow lagoon. Because of that, visiting Îlot Fourneau feels less like a classic tourist excursion and more like a simple, authentic outing. It is also not the kind of islet usually associated with many catamarans or large tour boats; when people do go across by sea, it is more often through a small local pirogue, often with the help of fishermen from the area. Seen from Le Morne Mountain, the islet stands out beautifully in the lagoon, with the coastline, reef flats, vegetation, and part of Le Morne village visible in the surrounding landscape.
