Peking ducks are raised on farms. The Peking duck is one of the species that is domesticated, because it is easy to raise. It originated in China and was imported to America for breeding as a domesticated backyard bird. Ducks are part of the Anatidae family, which are aquatic palmiped birds with a flattened and rounded beak. They are birds that have a short tail and webbed feet for moving through the water. It is a domestic duck of choice, because it is large and gives a good amount of meat. It has a good temperament, fast growth, and the female can lay an egg a day for several months if prevented from incubating. Identification : It is easy to recognize it, because it is a duck with a completely white plumage, with a yellow or orange beak, and legs that are orange. Its neck is thick and its head is round. It has a rectangular body shape when seen from the side. It has a body that measures in the 65 cm, a wingspan in the 140 cm, and weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 kilos when adult. The female and the male are identical. The male can be differentiated as being more voluminous than the female, and has a straight tail, while she has tail feathers with a curved tip. Like the other species it has a wide and flat beak with a round tip. Habitat: In the wild, they frequent the forests near ponds, rivers, or marshes. Nesting: The nest is built by the female, is made of plant material, and is covered with down, hair and moss. After mating, the duck lays a dozen eggs and only starts incubating the last egg laid. She will incubate the white eggs for about 4 weeks. The little ducks will follow their mother, and she will at first limit their bathing, because the little ones do not have the ability to waterproof their feathers well. They will be able to breed at about six months of age. Peking ducks feed mainly on aquatic plants, fruits, seeds, small tadpoles, and insects. Of course, it is possible to observe them in the wild, as some have escaped from breeding farms. Its English name is 'American pekin duck' and its scientific name is Anas peking. The life span of the Peking duck is about 9 to 12 years.
