Lemurs are a species of monkey endemic to Madagascar but you can still see them in Mauritius. The five families of this atypical monkey are only observable in the four corners of "the big island". It can be found in national parks, nature reserves or in its simplest habitat, the tropical forest. Symbol of the Malagasy fauna, it will embellish your outings at the bend of a hike in the forest, during your outings in the great south or during a birdwatching tour. Considered as the ancestor of the monkey, you will see it in its natural habitat only in Madagascar but in nature reserves in Mauritius like La Vanille Nature park. They are very intelligent animals, of which certain species like the Sifaka, are very comfortable with man. It is not rare that a lemur comes to lodge on your shoulders during your outings in the forest! Today, there are more than 100 species of lemurs. Each one of them can be seen in Madagascar, either in Zoos, in one of the numerous national parks or in the wilderness. The places where they can be observed are innumerable and new species are still being discovered today, like the dwarf lemur of Ankarana. The famous Maki Catta is recognizable by its black and white ringed tail. This specie of Lemur is the most popular. It takes its name from its meowing and purring, similar to those of a cat (catta). It can be observed in the national park of La Vanille in the south of Mauritius.
