Forest Near Pont Bon Dieu Cave

This photo shows the forested area near Pont Bon Dieu Cave, also known as Pont Bondieu Cave, in Mauritius. The site is situated south of La Nicolière Reservoir, close to the boundary between the Flacq and Moka districts, near the Belvédère / Brisée Verdière area. Pont Bon Dieu is not only a forest spot, but also a volcanic cave site formed by old lava tubes, with natural rock chambers and a cave entrance hidden below the surrounding vegetation. The forest around the cave is part of what makes the place particular. Visitors first experience dense greenery, shaded paths, roots, creepers, and uneven ground before reaching the cave area. The main cave is known for its large volcanic opening and rock formations, but access should be approached carefully because the terrain can be slippery, overgrown, and difficult after rain. Older parliamentary records also mention problems such as dumping, damaged access, and overgrown vegetation around the cave, showing that Pont Bon Dieu is a fragile natural site that needs proper care.
