The Sad Kingfisher (Acridotheres tristis) also known as the Martin, an exotic species originating from tropical areas of Asia, is often confused with the Mainate, although they are very different. The Martin was introduced to Mauritius in the 18th century by Pierre Poivre to fight against an invasion of locusts that were destroying the crops. The Martin has a brown plumage on the body with a kind of helmet on the head and neck made of smooth and shiny black feathers. Its very light blue eye is beautifully hemmed with black and has long eyelashes. This impressive look is enhanced by a golden yellow mask around the eye. The tips of the rectrices are white. These characteristics distinguish it from the Mainate which is black with yellow feathers at the back of the neck and a black eye. Amusing by its gait, mischievous and greedy, it settles down, steals and imposes itself in front of the small passerines to steal a booty. Good public, this bird feeds on everything. It often plays the proud arm being more imposing than the other birds of the islands. A gait, rather amusing when it is on the ground, waddling or running. A false comic air of Sicilian mafioso with gummed plumage...
