The 6 most amazing mountains of Mauritius

Mauritius, synonymous with heavenly beaches, is also home to majestic mountains and hiking trails.

It is in the heart of the Indian Ocean, in the Mascarene archipelago, that stands the emblematic island of Mauritius. The white sands of its beaches give way to mountains with steep slopes and breathtaking views. Drive up to the mountains in your car! Then lace up your shoes to conquer Morne Brabant, Signals Mountain or Pieter Both.

The mountain of Le Pouce

It is between Pieter Both and the Montagne des Signaux that stands the third highest Mauritian summit: the mountain of Le Pouce. From the top of its 812 meters, it also houses a family hiking trail in the middle of nature. After an hour's walk, enjoy the magical panorama that stretches out before you with its view of the North. On a clear day, you will see the capital city of Saint-Louis and many islands such as Ile Plate, Ile Ronde or Ile aux Serpents.

Le Morne Brabant

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, the Morne Brabant is an emblematic natural jewel of Mauritius. It dominates the southwest of the island, from the top of its 555 meters. A hiking trail allows you to easily hike to the top, in about 3 hours. All along the path, observe the tropical fauna and flora spread out all around you. This emblematic mountain also contains a very particular history. Indeed, it is in its slopes that slaves took refuge to escape their master in the 17th century. After your ascent, admire the blue of the lagoon mingling with the fine sand and the coconut trees of the magnificent beach of Le Morne!

The Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire

Located in the South-West in the heart of the Black River Gorges National Park, the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire reaches an altitude of 828 meters. It is the highest mountain of Mauritius. Its ascent in the shade of the foliage is done without hindrance in 3 hours round trip. All along the way, admire the many Mauritian treasures around you. Observe various waterfalls, the bay of Black River or in the distance, the paradisiacal lagoon of the majestic Morne.

The Signals Mountain

The mountain of Signaux is a natural and historical emblematic figure for the inhabitants of the island. Indeed, just like in Morne Brabant, many slaves took refuge there to escape their fate. It was also used as a lookout to observe the departure and arrival of boats in the capital's harbor. Its hike is easy to access and coveted by many sportsmen. At the top of the mountain, contemplate the unobstructed view of Port-Louis which stands out on the horizon!

The Lion Mountain

The mountains of Mauritius owe their original name to their exceptional shape. Let your imagination guide you to notice the mane and silhouette of a lion lying on the slopes of the wild Lion Mountain. Adventurers will enjoy this 5-hour hike that combines walking and climbing. The sometimes physical and vertiginous ascent in the heart of a luxuriant vegetation gives way to an extraordinary landscape once you reach the top. Indeed, you have an incredible view on the southern islets, the lagoon of Mahebourg and the sugar cane fields.

The Pieter Both

Recognizable by its peak in the shape of a human head, Pieter Both is the second largest mountain of the island with its 823 meters of altitude. Reaching its summit is often reserved for adventure enthusiasts and experienced hikers. Indeed, the ascent which lasts between 3 and 6 hours requires technique and training. Bring a harness and ropes to climb it without any problem! It is must do activity for climbers looking for big thrills.
